Increase in national minimum wage
The Government has today announced that in October there will be
a minimum wage increase of double the rate of average earnings growth
and almost three times the rate of inflation
The Government has accepted the Low Pay Commission's recommendations
for the National Minimum Wage to rise to £4.50 an hour for
adults and £3.80 for the youth rate. The increase will take
place in October this year when the main rate will increase from
£4.20 to £4.50 and the youth rate from £3.60 to
£3.80.
Ms Hewitt on behalf of the Government has also provisionally accepted
a recommendation for further increases in October 2004 to £4.85
per hour for adults and £4.10 for the youth rate. These figures
will be reviewed by the Low Pay Commission next year, taking into
account economic circumstances
The Government has also announced that it is to ask the Low Pay
Commission, working closely with relevant Government departments,
to look at the possible advantages and disadvantages of introducing
a minimum wage for 16- and 17-year-olds.
